It has been mentioned that Sherwin Castillo took a fairly long break from photography and perhaps it was also this pressing detachment that made him long to hear the shutter clicking once more. Soon after the break, Sherwin has become active to the club internally although he rarely attended PWC events. He would submit photos for the monthly inter-club competitions where the invited guest judges, highly eminent in their fields, more often than not, picked his entries relevant to the theme. The images he took represented some of the Alpha Camera Club’s entries to the formal and national PWC competitions. The judges’ intuition didn’t go wrong because their bets persistently placed in the higher-pointer half of the photographers’ monthly A-list. Since Sherwin remained anonymous mostly to the greater rest of the photography crowd, other camera clubs developed a rousing interest about his identity.

In the recent Photoworld Cup awarding held in AIMS Makati on January 28, 2012, Sherwin secured himself the 3rd spot for the Top 10 Photographers of the Year 2011 award. There he satisfied everyone’s curiosity when he showed up on stage and took the prestigious plate of the title.

Congratulations to you, Sherwin!

Alpha Camera Club has now morphed into a new administration and the initial step to this refreshing twist is finding a new face that will stand behind the club’s highest designation. Appointing the prestigious title of a “Chairman” was one of the various things the core group deliberated and so with the consensus of the board, one name resounded fit to the Chairmanship position. Everyone welcomes him with gleeful pride and trust as he embraces the endeavor with full confidence. Chairman Ely Perez, you’re the next big thing.

Just a chip of recollection, Ely Perez has been a member of the club since 1987. It’s amazing how this man instinctually gets on by in spite of the arduous twists and turns of time and still gets delighted with the demands of the craft. Now more than ever, Alpha Camera Club is celebrating Chairman Ely Perez’s bold step into the spotlight and is gladly is looking forward to the next 25 years that begins at his term.
All the best of luck for our very own, Chairman Ely Perez!

While Fred Figueroa’s photo locked its place on the 8th, it was one of the strongest in the batch and was Judge Nonoy Gallardo’s ultimate favorite. The songwriter judge was so deeply moved with how the photo related to the song Saranggola Ni Pepe that he chipped the image a perfect score. On the serendipitous contrary, Fred casually took this photo in Baler, Aurora without humming the song in mind.

The name Sherwin Castillo constantly resonated in monthly PWCUP judgings and this incontestably put a capital P in pride—explaining in general what everyone in Alpha Camera Club feels. Considering his fresh approach, it was very surprising that he has embodied the craft with such gusto. Unassumingly Sherwin bagged the 2nd place and still slid another photo into the roster of finalists.

Sherwin Castillo-1st

Alpha Camera Club’s holy week clearance was an immediate celebration of an impromptu victory. Answering why, it was Sherwin Castillo’s entry that bagged the 1st spot for the month’s theme “Humor”. It was also his first comeback after a long break from photography. A first of the first. Here, the photo was taken in Marinduque during the season’s fiesta of Moriones.

Standing on the 6th spot was a sole distinctive concept among the entire roster of images. This photo of a man holding Spideys on a stick was certainly a matchless ingenuity by Joy Ganaden.

Two other members of the club blithely won the propulsion winning 9th and 10th. Sherbeth Quion very well claimed the 9th spot while Jonathan Cayaon took the 10th. This was a go green moment for the Club.

The theme for the second month of the Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation 2011 Photo World Cup was TIKIM, TAKAM, TSARAP– or photography of Filipino cuisine. While the theme appeared like it was easy as pie, it was—on the contrary– quite a challenge to accomplish. It was quite difficult to translate the ambrosial delicacy of Filipino food in an 8” by 12” colored photograph.

It was this seeming simplicity of the theme that made it quite difficult for the members of Alpha Camera Club to produce creditable photographs for this month. That said, the club struggled even with its intergroup elimination to meet with the standards of the theme. Ready to throw in the towel, the club was pleasantly surprised to have four of its photos shortlisted in the thirty photos for this month.

A photo each by Mai Gallego and Cris Cleofas secured a position as a shortlisted finalist for this month’s PWC. It was even more surprising to have Cris Cleofas and Rusty Marino of Alpha Camera Club reign in third and fourth places, respectively. Carlo Zamora of Framed Shots Camera Club dominated the March leg placing a solid first with his close-up photo of a man peeling a hot shrimp. This was the second first place victory of the said club this year. Last month, Framed Shots also bagged the first place.

Photojournalist Jay Directo, Professor-Photographer Larry Lopez, and Artist-Writer-Professor-Photographer Darryl Quioge gracefully judged this month’s leg of events. It must have been a difficult task for the three to judge this month’s roster of colored photographs without making them hungry.

The other top-ten places are the following: Marc Capistrano of Nayon Photographers Club for the second place, Dino Perez of Ayala Alabang Camera Club for the fifth place, Irma Santos of Framed Shots Camera Club bagged sixth, Precy Sison-Oro of Lenti got seventh position, Betty Lalana of Nayon placed a solid eighth place, Ruth David of My Camera Club won ninth, and a club entry from Sprazzo Camera Club secured the tenth position.

ALPHA Camera Club: Unity Through Passion
What does 25 years mean in the life of a Camera Club?

When you mention the year 1986 to most Filipinos, the first thing that comes to mind is the historic EDSA revolution. EDSA and 1986 were important parts in Filipinos’ lives. But for ALPHA Camera Club, 1986 signals something special. For ALPHA, is the landmark, the beginning of what would be a longstanding organization of people who share a deep passion for photography and perhaps so much more. During the same year EDSA happened, Tony Raval and a few of his colleagues established what would be the backbone of this organization.

ALPHA or Association of Lovers of Photography and the Arts began only as an avenue for hobbyist photographers to practice their newfound passion in the craft. Primarily dubbing themselves as the Palpak Camera Club—a tongue-in-cheek name to laugh at the the group’s failure in taking good photos—the group gathered together in the Fuji YKL photography hub in Hidalgo, Quiapo to discuss and learn from each other whatever techniques they can do to improve their photography skills. The name Palpak was eventually changed to ALPHA to dispel the negative connotation that the word Palpak (Filipino slang for failure or mistake) implies. Joe Sarmiento, one of then-Board of Directors of FPPF (Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation), was the one
who suggested to the group to adopt this new name.

And if we are to take on clichés, the rest is history.

But of course history does not stop in the establishment of a group. History takes its course: sharpens, culminates and polishes. The young photo enthusiasts who gathered in 1986 are not too young anymore. Ka Tony Raval, one of the pioneer members of the group, has passed away. Some of the young hobbyists who started the group are now professional photographers, with many accolades and achievements under their belts. Certainly 25 years is a long time since ALPHA began and what 25 years have done in the lives of this group of people.

The important question now is: what is 25 years in the life of ALPHA Camera Club? The easiest way to do this is to count the many achievements of the group: Five Photoworld Cup (PWC) Camera Club of the Year. The group garnered its first three wins in 1996, 1997, and 1998. Then again, ALPHA won this coveted cup in 2009 and 2010. Considering the number of FPPF-member camera clubs competing for this prestigious cup, garnering five cups is not a bad feat for a camera club. Several members of the group have consistently placed in the PWC Top 10 Photographers of the Year like Dewey Sergio, one of the group’s founding members, and Cris Cleofas, to name a few. Up to now, ALPHA is still an active affiliate of the Association of Philippine Camera Clubs, an arm of the FPPF.

Several photography exhibits also go under the belt of achievements of this group. In 2000, the group has successfully displayed its first photo exhibit entitled ‘Exhibit One’ at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. In April 2004, its second major show ‘Nostalgia: Laguna, Images of the Past, Captured at the Present,’ a series of monochrome photographs, was presented in a month-long exhibit at The Alcove, Filipino Heritage Library. ‘Celebrating Twenty’ is the group’s third major exhibit; it was made to commemorate the group’s 20 years in the industry. cting the very best of their travel photographs. Two of the group’s most recent exhibits were showcased at the Fort Santiago Chamber entitled ‘Biyaheng Norte’ and ‘Images of Independence,’ in June 2008 and June 2009 respectively.

Another noteworthy achievement of ALPHA is that it has survived the transition from film photography to digital photography, an important shift in this craft. Most, if not all, of its members have embraced this switch and are now mastering the art of this new technique. Young photographers must understand that this film to digital shift is a decisive turning point in the lives of photography as a craft. Young digital photographers must understand that this shift was not an effortless one as many struggled to adopt this new method. This period was a serious down time for the group. This was the period between the 1998 cup and the 2009 cup—an eleven year drought in the group’s achievements.

Most importantly, those 25 years have cultivated this group into the solid organization that they are now. The friendships and camaraderie that the group has formed with each other surpass ordinary professional relationships. How many camera clubs can proudly claim that they are bonded as a group? Perhaps many can do so but ALPHA Camera Club has that unique quality that makes you feel like their members treat each other much more than a colleague. The members treat each other more than friends who enjoy the same passion; the members treat each other like family with the same concern and same criticism as a blood relation. This unity, this sense of family, is the formula that makes ALPHA Camera Club last a solid 25 years.

While have some gone to pursue other passions, most of the group stayed intact. Some have passed away like Tony Raval and Rene Ledesma new ones like Sylvester Raval, grandson to the pioneer Tony Raval, Jonathan Cayaon, Joy Ganaden, and Paul del Rosario have arisen to take over and continue to give pride to the association.

Certainly, 25 Years is a long time and those 25 years have transformed this group to the solid organization that they are now.
